Re: UN Plaza: Conflict Minerals (Mark Leon Goldberg & David Sullivan)
This is a very poorly done piece. The gentlemean who professes to be an expert in "conflict minerals" is not. All of the "metals" mentioned in the piece are sourced overwhelmingly from Maylaysia and Brazil (tin), Australia and Brazil (tantalum), the Peoples Republic of China (tungsten), and the Republic of South Africa, The United States, Canada, Russia, and China (gold). Minerals used to produce metals that are mined in the Democratic Republic of the Congo by "artisanal" miners are smuggled out to avoid taxes and produced without any regard for the health or safety of the miners. The minerals are processed by western and Chinese companies who fabricate certificates of origin-this seems unknown to your expert-and pay far below market prices.
The various thugs and warlords who use slaves to produce these minerals are abetted by the end-users who get a cost advantage by ignoring the suffering of the actual workers and the laws of the DRC and the global market place for metals and minerals.
Sincerely, Bob, you should avoid having pieces like this; it makes you look foolish and shallow.

Quoting JackLifton: [...]
Seemed to me that most of your points were in fact made in the diavlog, if perhaps not emphasized as you have done. In particular, I came away from listening to it understanding that the four minerals in question are not primarily obtained from the troubled countries, that Congo is more of a smuggling point than a producer, and that obfuscation on the receiving end is one of the main impediments to addressing the bad situations in the central African mines.

Are you a crazy person?
The conversation here told precisely the same story you just outlined, only it went into further depth.
It was deeper--less shallow--than your post.
Are you all right? Do you need medication? Yours is one of the most batshit posts I've ever seen on bloggingheads, which is saying something!

Ray, I think you might have overstated you objections. Most "batshit?" I think I might be able to find a counterexample or two if I look around the archives for second or two.

1) JL obviously responded to the segment titles without listening to the conversation.
2) I replied to him as if he had actually listened to the conversation.
3) They wouldn't be counter-examples.

I'll give you one and two. As long as we're discussing a superlative claim ("most,") I think I'll stand by my use of the word "counterexample."
